Ripped from her mother's bosom and shipped to England as an exhibit for Sir Walter Raleigh, Nadie, a Native American Indian, is thrust into the boiling pot of brutish Tudor life. Her only protector is Tom, a young blacksmith who falls in love with her. Too soon, Nadie is forced back to her exotic lands, to help the English colonize her people. But the New World holds uncharted danger - can Nadie protect Tom in her world?

This book was fascinating in the very poetic and immediate first person telling. Ms. Francis uses a lot of metaphors to tell her tale, and it works. It's quite beautiful, and while I am usually a very fast reader, I found myself slowing down and savouring her use of metaphor to carry an emotion along with the brief words. My only complaint is that the ending is truncated. Since the entire story was carried on emotions and feelings, I felt like the ending was too abrupt; I needed one more chapter for full closure with the characters. The characters are likable and, despite being over 500 years prior to the present day, you can really relate to them. Just goes to show that human problems, whether in the 16th century or the 21st, are pretty universal. Ms. Francis did her homework and makes the world as real and accurate as possible while still making the human element relevant to the current day, a very delicate balancing act. The Algonquin components are beautifully well done; she neither makes her Indians "noble savages" nor evil marauding beasts, which is impressive. She captures the humanity in the evil acts done by both English and Indians alike, and makes it sympathetic.
Brava, Ms. Francis. But one more chapter to close it out. It felt like it ended on the climax of the story, and left me feeling like someone hung up the phone mid-conversation.
